County of Vorpommern-Greifswald: Area as a challenge and opportunity

The county of Vorpommern-Greifswald embodies something special in many ways. It is the third largest district of the Federal Republic of Germany. With almost four thousand square kilometers, it is almost twice the size of the Saarland. However, with just under 240,000 inhabitants, this area is relatively sparsely populated - a fact that presents a challenge in terms of infrastructure but offers opportunities and scope for projects at the same time: The district, particularly the island of Usedom and the Szczecin Lagoon, has become a popular holiday destination. Sun, water and 40 kilometers of finest sandy beaches, one of the longest cross-border promenades in Europe and many cultural offerings attract visitors all year round.

Extensive fields show that agriculture here in the northeast is an important source of income. A surprising fact is that also the heavy industry with its foundries is traditionally rooted in the district. In Lubmin, a former nuclear power plant is being developed into one of the largest industrial and energy sites in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the city of Wolgast still has a good reputation in terms of shipbuilding.

The Hanseatic city of Greifswald, the district town of our county, is amongst the emerging cities in Germany. The time-honored university is one of the most popular study locations in the Federal Republic and has worldwide significance as a science location. As a result, several other research institutes and high-tech manufacturing facilities have settled nearby.

If you like the combination of rough originality, the idyll of lovely rural and small-town life and the sophisticated touch of the imperial baths on the island of Usedom as well as the Hanseatic flair of Greifswald, you will inevitably be amazed by the landscape in the extreme northeast.
